Franschhoek, South Africa

About an hours drive from Cape Town you’ll find the sleepy town of Franschhoek, built around the innumerable wineries that sit in the valley this is a great place to escape for a night or two (you can do a day trip if you’re pressed for time but it’s not recommended without a designated driver). The main street is lined with art galleries and restaurants but we were there for the wineries so we headed straight for the wine tram, which is actually genius and makes exploring the valley a breeze.

There are quite a few accommodation options in Franschhoek from the upmarket Mont Rochelle hotel and winery owned by Sir Richard Branson through to the more budget options and of course of preference, Airbnb.

The Loft – super cute little loft in Franschoek, just outside of town (5 min walk to everything). The honesty bar complete with local wines was a real winner for us!

Eat + Drink

Marigold – incredible authentic Indian. Pretty classy joint but they didn’t seem to mind us eating with our hands, even brought us out a dish of water to rinse off!

Tuk Tuk Brewery – great local beers, simple pub grub. What more can I say?

Big Dog Cafe – coffee house with onsite roastery. Best breakfast and coffee in Franschhoek

Things To Do

Franschhoek Wine Tram – you simply cannot go to Franschhoek and not go on the wine tram, it’s essentially a winery tour by tram (or bus, or tractor depending on the route you take). The hardest part of the whole experience is choosing which line to take, from there you just hop on and hop off at the wineries of your choice. We went to five in about six hours, you can’t really go wrong!

Franschhoek Pass Sunset at the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve – one of Trip Advisor’s top activity suggestions for Franschhoek is sunset views at Franschhoek Pass. However if you drive about 100m past ‘the spot’ you’ll see a dirt track on the left, the entry point to the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve. We had the spot to ourselves and the views are pretty incredible. Take a bottle of wine up and just chill and watch the sun set over the valley
